In the center of this traditional Celtic cross are the three letters IHS, which may have several meanings. A Biblical scholar has explained to me that IHS, in this case, is actually one of the monograms for Christ. The letters are Greek (iota, eta, sigma) and are the first three letters in the name Jesus, I H C O Y C. The "C" and the "S" are variants within the Greek alphabet. This far predates any of the other modern translations. I have been told at various times they stand for the Latin "IN HOC SANCTIS" meaning "in this place sacred" or they can stand for the English phrases "In His service" or "I have suffered."
